Champions of Character
Champions of Character are membership ambassadors for Character.org. They help us stay in tune with the needs and interests of our members as well as being character education experts in their own right. These individuals understand the transformative power of the 11 Principles of Character Education and have been strong advocates for character education in their schools, districts and states.
Vivian DeliaVivian Delia is the president of the state-wide character education initiative, the Florida Intentional Character Partnership (FICP). She has served as the Character.org state coordinator of Florida for five years. She also works as a Field Supervisor at St. Petersburg College. Vivian has extensive experience working in schools, having been a school counselor for many years.

Dara Feldman_Dara Feldman has 16 years of experience as a classroom teacher, during which she was named Disney’s 2005 Elementary School Teacher of the year. In addition to serving as a Character.org trainer and evaluator, Dara is also an ASCD Faculty Member, Success Principles trainer and Virtues Project master facilitator. She previously served as the president of the Maryland Center for Character Education and the author of The Heart of Education, a book about bringing meaning and joy back to teaching and learning.

TomFerryTom Ferry is the principal of Cheesequake Elementary, a 2014 National School of Character and a Title I distinguished school. He has previously served as a mathematics teacher and the vice principal of both a middle school and a high school. He is also an educational consultant and the founder of Soar the Scores, LLC.

Bob FreadoBob Freado is the former principal of McMurray Elementary School, a 2004 National School of Character and served as the Coordinator for Character Education at the Peters Township School District, a 2010 National District of Character. He recently retired after 34 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator in public schools. Bob holds a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Pittsburgh (1997).

Barbara-GruenerBarbara Gruener is a counselor and character coach at Westwood-Bales Elementary, a 2009 National School of Character. She grew up on a family farm in Wisconsin and credits life on that dairy with helping build her character strength and work ethic during her formative years. Barbara has worked as a teacher and counselor with students across all grades, pre-K through 12th, for 30years.  During that time, she has always used fun as her invitation to engage, create, discover, learn, and grow with her students. Barbara is also the author of The Corner on Character blog and a brand new book about SUPERHEROES of the Character Kind.

Sue Kidd web (1)Sue Kidd is the Coordinator of the Kansas Character Development Initiative, that developed the Social, Emotional, Character Development (SECD) Standards, the Kansas Character Recognition Programming and she is a Board Member of the Topeka City of Character. She is a long-time Kansas educator.

Tamra Nast web-2Tamra Nast is a school counselor at Birmingham Covington School, a 2007 National School of Character and a Co-Chair of Birmingham Public School’s District Character Education Initiative. She is a Character.org trainer and enjoys helping schools learn about school culture. One of her passions is teaching others how to integrate character in every aspect of life.

Marian NelsonMarian Nelson has over 20 years of experience as an educator and continues to keep her sights on the children of the world. As publisher at Nelson Publishing & Marketing, she creates resources to help students, teachers, and families build healthy character, reaching as many people as possible in her books and presentations.

Mona NoyesMona Noyes is a board member of the New Jersey Alliance for Social Emotional and Character Development (NJASECD) and previously served as its Southern Regional Networking Coordinator.  She worked in the Cherry Hill School District, leading the Character Education initiative there for many years. Mona has a background in social work and has experience working with parent and community groups.

Tina SohnTina Sohn is Sullivan School District character education leader and an art teacher at Sullivan Primary School, a 2010 National School of Character. Tina also leads professional development workshops in character education in early childhood education and helped Southwest Early Childhood Center become a 2015 National School of Character.

Madison Tomlinson 2Madison Tomlinson is the Character.org state coordinator in Oklahoma and has been an integral part of the growth of the state affiliate, OKCharacter.org. He spent his career serving the Muskogee Public Schools, as a Teacher for 17 years, an Assistant Principal for 11 and the Director of Character Development for 7.

Hal UrbanHal Urban has taught for 36 years at two high schools in the Bay Area and at USF. He has won several awards for excellence in teaching and was the 2005 winner of the Sanford N. McDonnell Lifetime Achievement in Character Education Award. He has a bachelor’s and masters in history and a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco and is the author of six books including Life’s Greatest Lessons and Lessons from the Classroom: 20 Things Good Teachers Do. He has been speaking since 1995, making presentations in 42 states and 8 countries.
