National School of Character Site Visit: Sheridan School

Visit a local 2017 National School of Character, and take back some of their practices to your own school and community. Learn about Sheridan’s successful shared leadership and meaningful curriculum, and see what a National School of Character looks like in action.

Building Peace by Teaching Controversial Content 
Thurs. Oct. 19 | 1:00pm | FREE
This free additional workshop comes with a two-day ticket to tour the Newseum exhibits in addition to the workshop content. After the workshop, you will be registered for NewseumED, their website which contains free educational resources.

Ever since its ratification, the First Amendment has engendered vigorous debate – sometimes civil, sometimes not – about what these freedoms should mean and how they should apply. Learn how to leverage the passion and interest of these flash points – ranging from hate speech to religious discrimination – as powerful teaching tools. A case-study approach provides a safe entry point for students to ask questions, be challenged to look at all sides of an issue, and learn how to have constructive civic dialogue to build a more peaceful, respectful world. Includes classroom-ready materials.

Monuments by Moonlight
Friday Oct. 20 | 8pm-10pm | Price: $50
Experience Washington, D.C. at night, and see historic national monuments and federal buildings flooded in light. A seasoned tour guide will describe the deep and rich stories behind each site while driving around the city.

2017 Sanford N. McDonnell Lifetime Achievement Award

The Sandy Award is named in honor of Character.org’s leader, philanthropist and champion, Sanford N. McDonnell whose legacy continues to inspire us to strive for excellence in character education. It has been presented annually since 1998 to a leader who exemplifies Sandy’s generous spirit and commitment to character.
