Richard Stockton Elementary School
Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Cherry Hill Public Schools

A¬†third grader recently¬†shared, “We are a great school because we all work together trying our hardest to be the very best!” Stockton Elementary School celebrates all voices as children, parents, and staff come together. We plan together, share sorrows, respect each other, celebrate differences, and experience amazing daily adventures.

In the spring of 2008 training began to create our School Leadership Council (SLC.) We started our journey by learning our conflict resolution styles and by taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment. We were able to break into groups to create our ideal school and present to each other our team vision. Trust, respect, a collaborative work environment that was welcoming and safe to students, staff, and parents were common threads.

Today what stands out at Richard Stockton is the comprehensive approach to character education, the opportunities for student and staff voices to be heard, and the goal of providing genuine opportunities for moral growth.

I like this school because there are wonderful teachers . . . They teach you how to handle bullying situations. They teach you how to handle gossip, they let you shine and do what you do best in the Stockton Spotlight. My most important detail of all is that they teach you how to stick up for others and show people you care.

Joining Stockton mid-year with 3 kids, each with very different needs, everyone from the principal and guidance counselor to the teachers and office staff went out of their way to welcome us and make it a positive transition for the kids. . . . They took the time to get to know us and within days, the kids loved the school. Now a year later, we feel comfortable, respected and connected to the community.

I admire organizations that think beyond their own walls, and Stockton School is a shining example.
