2015 National School of Character
Mildred E. Strang Middle School (MESMS) is located in Yorktown Heights in Westchester County. Prior to 2004, we had a rise in disrespectful and unsafe behavior as well as in the demerit, insubordination and suspension rates, which showed that our reactive system of discipline was ineffective. Therefore, we adopted Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), and later the Olweus Bullying Prevention and Operation Positive Role Model programs in our school to promote a supportive school environment. We started with a small committee and the slowly reached out to staff, parents, students using data and their own perceptions to show the importance for change. We modeled the principles and actions we believed were necessary to “turn the school around” and end negativity. As more people bought into the program, we saw more problem solving, involvement, outreach and less apathy from the entire school community. Through the years our character education program has evolved into a way of life where the expectations of being safe, responsible, and respectful have been intertwined into all aspects of our academic community. Positive behavior is not only expected, but celebrated. We are very proud of our students for their efforts to “do the right thing” each and every day. We strive to instill in our students the knowledge, skills and values to be competent, caring and compassionate world citizens and leaders.
