Oak Brook Elementary
2015 National School of Character
Oak Brook Elementary School (OB) educates students in grades K-5 and also houses a preschool room. The school is located in unincorporated Ballwin, Missouri. OB sits on 23 acres and is surrounded by woods and a brook running along the western side of the school. The area consists mostly of single family houses with a few small businesses. We also draw a small percentage of our population from the City of St Louis through the Voluntary Transfer Program. The school opened its doors during the 1990-1991 school year and has always had tremendous support from parents. We began our character education journey in 2009 after realizing that the office referral rate was too high. Our Principal attended the National Character Education conference and enrolled in LACE with Dr. Marvin Berkowitz. The principal then shared his learning with students, staff, and parents to fully bring them on board with character education. Staff, community members, and parents attended the Summer Character Education Institute at UMSL. Staff and parents also completed Caring Schools Community training, and a Climate Team was formed. The asst. principal attended LACE and revised our character work with the team. OB strives to incorporate Character Education into everything we do. We continue to evaluate our program using surveys on school climate given to students, parents, and staff, as well as data on student achievement and office referrals. OB was proud to be named a Missouri School of Character in 2014.
