Old Bridge Township Public School District (OBPS), in Middlesex County, lies in the center of NJ. Spanning 42 square miles, the district has 16 schools: a Pre-School, 12 elementary (grades K-5), 2 middle (grades 6-8), a Grade Nine Center/OBHS (grades 9-12); serving 9,000 to 10,000 students yearly. One of NJ’s largest suburban districts, we offer full-day Kindergarten, a comprehensive High School & 2 on-campus Planetariums, taking STEM to a whole new level. OBPS has focused on the “whole child” & been committed to school climate & CE’s basic principles since it began educating students over 50 years ago. When school counselors & one elementary school principal noticed that our schools weren’t really aware of how social, emotional & behavioral success is as important as academic achievement, our journey truly began. We won 3 USDOE counseling grants, putting a full-time counselor in each elementary school & creating a developmental CE model curriculum. Our principal discovered Character.org via NJASECD & began observing her school to see who seemed connected & felt safe; who felt confident to seek support & who felt challenged & engaged. She formed the first CE Team, getting everyone to know, understand & live Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education every day. Soon, they were a full school community proudly & actively demonstrating CE every day. 2010, they were our 1st State School of Character; 2011 our 1st NSOC. Now with 8 SSOC & 5 NSOC, & Cheesequake Elementary School, a 2014 National Model, our journey continues!
