Pond Elementary School
Wildwood, Missouri
2015 National School of Character

Pond Elementary SchoolPond Elementary School is located in the municipality of Wildwood, Missouri. Built in 1951, the school has seen its surrounding grow from a sparsely populated country town to a booming suburb. The high academic achievement of students has been a consistent product throughout the years at Pond. Even with the high rates of academic success, something was missing. Relationships of staff and students at and across grade levels left much to be desired. Prior to the start of the 2008 school year, teachers from each grade level invited the newly hired principal to lunch to discuss incorporating character education into the school’s culture. Our journey officially began that summer with the full commitment of our administration and representation at each grade level. The first few years of this journey focused on building meaningful professional and personal relationships amongst staff. We started eating together at least once a month, engaging in cross grade level collaborations, scheduling Happy Hours, and having open and honest conversations about our progress and our goals. Over the past three years, we have seen great progress as a staff. We have become better role models for out students and have set our sites upon empowering them to be leaders in and around the school community. Pond has grown from a collection of fragmented pockets to a unified structure that values the role of each student, parent, and staff member in building a community that cares.
