Quarry Hill Elementary SchoolThe character education journey has been an ongoing, continuous process at Quarry Hill Elementary School.  Each day, the school community is reminded to “have a learning filled day and remember to take care of each other.”  In addition to this mantra, a lot of great character development practices have been happening in individual classrooms, but we wanted a new character development program that allows the whole school community to work together to develop character on a deeper level with school wide programming and events, so we formed a character development committee with members of the faculty, staff, and school community.  Our character initiative aims to provide the students, parents, faculty, and staff with a common character development program and a common language to support the character development of the school community.  One challenge and obstacle that the school community is facing is the implementation of PA Core Standards and the new level of rigor that the students are experiencing.  With increased performance goals, students are easily getting frustrated and giving up instead of staying positive and accepting the new learning responsibilities.  PAWS was created based on Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education as a way to remind the entire Quarry Hill Community of the core values that all good people of character possess and to remind teachers to focus on character development each day in addition to the academic focus of the school day.
