Selvidge Middle School
2015 National School of Character
Character education has become tradition and a cornerstone of our school culture at Selvidge Middle School. Since its initial development in 2000-01, the essentials of an effective community-wide character education program have improved yearly. Selvidge utilizes its core values and the “Stallion Way” along with the Rockwood School District mission statement of “whatever it takes” to drive our work. These defined and identified traits are observable at SMS on a daily basis. We are community involved school with character embedded in our curriculum and opportunity for student leadership. Selvidge has received Honorable Mention for three consecutive years, obtained a remarkable 7 Promising Practices Awards (to name a few-Simple Mentoring, Nature Trail Workdays, STREAMS, Transition to High school Partnership, and Pet Therapy Public Service). Character education is supported by staff through our high quality job-embedded professional learning and teaming times, and a purposeful and dedicated time for planning, sustainability and improvement. We have recently added a dedicated class time for character weekly at our school. During this time the Stallion Way is a part of everything we do, including experiential service learning, student leadership and voice with Character Congress, and opportunities to demonstrate in observable behaviors our words of character: respect, courage, self-control, perseverance, caring, honesty, patience, responsibility, and cooperation.)
