2015 National School of Character
Theunis Dey Elementary School is a Pre-K though 5 school of approximately 430 students in Wayne, NJ. Our community is made up of many different cultures, races, and religions of which 13% have special needs. Families’ socioeconomic circumstances vary as well. Given our diverse demographic/learning population, we work diligently to ensure that our school fosters an environment where individual needs are appreciated and honored. Theunis is unique because it seamlessly weaves Character Education into every aspect of our school life. CORE VALUES inform all of our work and are an essential part of our academics, service learning, and family involvement. Under our former principal, Dr. Laura Russomano, we began our work through the Developing Safe/Civil Schools (DSACS) Grant. We continued this work through our Social Emotional/Character Education Committee, which includes students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other community members. Our goal is to prepare students to be responsible, contributing members of society. Since our implementation of Character Education, all stakeholders alike realize the importance and magnitude of the effects of CE. All community stakeholders were a part of the development of our CE program. Members appreciate that having a structured CE program has improved our learning environment/performance, inspiring students to be lifelong service learners.
