Waseca Jr & Sr High SchoolWe have benefited from a supportive, economically sound community.  During the past 10 years the demographics of our community have changed.  The financial situations of many families have changed.  Our free and reduced lunch numbers have increased.  Our school housed students in grades 9 – 12 when we started our journey in 2009 and were recognized as the 2012 State School of Character.  Our district has gone through financial struggles and found it necessary in 2011-12 to close a building and transition grades 7 & 8 into the high school building and transitioning Waseca High School to Waseca Jr & Sr High.  It was a welcome challenge to form a new and culture with 325 additional students and 30 staff members in the 2012-13 school year   We became involved in Character.org’s Schools of Character process in 2009.  We were identified as a   2012 Minnesota School of Character.  We have been recognized for several promising practices at both the state and national levels, however the amazing part of our journey has been how the words “Character Education” have become part of who we are.  Our  students refer to character when behaviors of others are questionable.  Our teachers talk about opportunities for students to experience character in their classroom settings.  The word is out about the importance of character in Waseca Schools.  Our answer to PBIS has been Character Education.  We teach, we promote, and we recognize good character from both staff and students. We have united as one.
