Mill Creek Upper Elementary
Belton,
Belton School District

Mill Creek Upper Elementary (MC) is a 5-6 school located in rural Cass County south of Kansas City, Missouri. We are the only 5-6 building in the district and have 5 feeder elementary schools. Mill Creek is the first transition that many of our 780+ students make. Five years ago, we were not meeting the needs of our students and it showed in student discipline, frustrated teachers, and low academic scores. We had to change how we were approaching teaching and learning. We began our journey four years ago with Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS). While seeing success with PBIS, we knew that we were still not impacting kids’ core values. We partnered with CHARACTERplus and Character Education Partnership. The last two years, we have seen a dramatic difference in our climate, student behavior, and our academic scores. Teachers, staff, parents, and community partners all had a part in creating our core values called Pirate Principles. These Principles are our foundation which allows everyone to feel valued and accepted. Administrators are actively involved in character education (CE) by offering trainings, workshops, leading PRIDE assemblies, providing motivation, strategies, and data, to guide in best practice. Teachers incorporate CE into their daily conversations and instruction. CE is not a program but a way of life now at MC. CE has allowed us to reach all students where we are constantly changing and growing to make MC a great place to learn.
