Eastern Christian School Association

2015 National School of Character
Eastern Christian School (ECS) is a PreK-12 faith-based institution of excellence, serving students and families in the northern NJ area since 1892. While ECS facilities and programs have changed over the years, its mission – to develop young men and women of Christian character – has remained constant. Leveraging its rich legacy of student faith and character development, ECS clarified its character and leadership vision as part of its Middle States Accreditation for Growth process in 2009. The ECS Middle States Accreditation Plenary Team tasked a group of staff to formalize and articulate a PreK – 12 leadership / character program. ECS consulted with Patrick Toffler, a leadership/character education expert, and developed a multi-campus Leadership Action Plan Team to oversee the PreK-12 character program. Gleaning salient principles from texts like Marrella’s “In Search of Ethics” and numerous faith-based resources, the ECS Leadership Team, guided by stakeholders from student, parent, alumni, faculty and church groups, developed 6 Core Ethical Values, residing under the umbrella statement of “In pursuing the character of Christ, we will…” These ECS Core Ethical values have provided the framework for a comprehensive character education program, entirely focused on fulfilling the Eastern Christian mission statement of “Engaging the Mind, Nurturing the Spirit, Transforming the World.” In 2014, Eastern Christian School was recognized as a state School of Character.
