Pennwood Middle SchoolPennwood Middle School is located in the suburban setting of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Our character education journey began with a mandate to develop and integrate an effective positive behavior program that would better serve our school community. Through the years, the idea of character education has evolved from a reactive approach to a more proactive approach. It has developed from several individual programs and activities to a more cohesive approach that includes year round initiatives and a student centered focus. Students, teachers, support staff, administrators, and parents collaborated to create common language which allowed all stakeholders to stay focused on the mission. After this collaboration, the Unity Team was born. Our mantra is “We are UNITED,” and the acronym UNITED stands for Unique, Nurturing, Involved, Together, Empowering, and Diverse.  This is now our driving force and our focus to create a school community that promotes social, emotional, and ethical development in addition to academics.  Instead of using one particular character education curriculum, we felt it was more important to emphasize character education as the vital underlying theme of our school community. The framework of our program allows us to use our best practices as well as’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education to nurture the whole child. Our goal is simple. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.”
