Skyview Upper Elementary SchoolSix years ago the staff, students and families of Skyview began a journey to create an ideal learning environment for 5th and 6th grade students in the Methacton School District. Skyview opened in September 2010 and brought together members from across six schools. As our character education journey’s roots were embedded in the development of our school, we were presented with the unique opportunity to create a learning community centered on the six pillars of Character Counts – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Our vision and mission revolve around these. A common language for our school, the pillars describe our behavior expectations and when working with students on making good choices. In order to maintain our focus on building student character, district initiatives are taken and integrated into our focus on character and the pillars. Our school community has been an integral part of our journey. Students drive planning for our events throughout the year. At the staff level a specific committee dedicated to character development promotes efforts in our building. We quickly realized that recognizing positive behavior in the pillars was vital. We recognize students weekly as pillarific. At the close of the school year we present awards in each of the pillars. Our staff believes that the sky’s the limit. We recognize that we have experienced great success but also that we must continue to be innovative and responsive to our school community.
