Harvest Hike for Hunger
For almost 20 years, the students at Pembroke Elementary School have been raising money for organizations near and far by collecting pledges to hike throughout their school neighborhood. The 2008-09 Harvest Hike event was the “Harvest Hike for Hunger – at home and in Haiti.” As students hiked through the neighborhood, they pulled wagons and collected canned goods to be donated to a local food bank. Pledges were collected to send to an organization that assists the hungry in Haiti. The Harvest Hike has provided many opportunities for students at Pembroke to become familiar with a variety of organizations and what they do to help others in our community and the world. The students and staff show “Pembroke Pride” when they are participating in the Harvest Hike. Students show responsibility by collecting pledges, perseverance for walking a long way, and keeping a positive attitude if they become tired. They show they are caring by working hard for the benefit of others. School staff and parents are partners and share the responsibility in the effort to make the school a learning and moral community. The Harvest Hike has helped to create a sense of responsibility and caring for the students at Pembroke.
