Throughout the school year, students in grades P-K through 5 participate in character building activities and service projects which build positive relationships with senior members of the community. Students explore many forms of writings such as friendly letters, poems, and short stories, and during various times throughout the year, students share their writing pieces with residents at the Eddy and Cohoes Senior Center. After creating writing pieces, students personally deliver and share their finished product to make personal connections with senior residents. Developing and sharing writing samples fosters responsibility. These experiences and positive reactions allow students to link their actions to positive emotions in others. This practice occurs several times a year -- students initiate their projects in September and then use holidays and special events as targeted opportunities to foster ongoing relationships. These service-learning activities enhance each students' awareness of citizenship and empathy, while they positively impact the lives of community members and their speical needs.
