Honoring our Veterans through Service Learning
On November 11th, Chesterfield Elementary students participated in a school-wide service learning activity by hosting a Veterans’ Day Celebration. All students participated in a learning activity from their curriculum that was related to patriotism and veterans. The ideas came from the school's Character Counts Kids Team who got ideas from their classrooms. Kindergarten students made placemats for the breakfast decorated with various American symbols. First graders wrote letters to each veteran. Second graders published class books about American symbols and veterans. Third graders performed a patriotic concert. Fourth graders drew portraits of veterans they know, which decorated the cafeteria, halls and gym. Fifth graders interviewed our visiting veterans. The morning began with a delicious breakfast. As the veterans were escorted to the gym by the student who invited them, the rest of the student body gave these brave men and women, a standing ovation. The third graders performed patriotic songs. Then retired Navy Captain Steve Foster (a former Chesterfield parent) shared his experiences of past deployment with a slide-show presentation.
