The Peter Pan Project
As a service learning project, the Fox High School Theatre Troupe students found a way to serve their community by collaborating and producing a play with two Fox High School special needs classes. Little did they know that this project would inspire moral action and ignite a life-long compassion to work together. The project offered the perfect opportunity for authentic service learning and student autonomy for both the Theatre Troupe and the special needs classes. After choosing the children’s story Peter Pan, the special needs students wrote their own lines for their performance. They explored theatre and discovered how to execute a stage production by writing a play, learning lines and blocking, and presenting a theatrical production in front of a live audience. Students developed caring connections and established strong bonds that have grown into lasting friendships and mentoring relationships. This experience has given our students the capacity to promote these values in all students, creating a caring school community and a climate of respect for others.
