Jefferson High School
Festus, Missouri

Jefferson High School opened its doors in August of 2009. With only 76 freshmen, those students are pulled in many different directions. To have a great impact on the larger community of Jefferson County, Logan King, freshman at JHS, founded Community Adolescents in R-7 with Empathy (C.A.R.E.). C.A.R.E. is a group of ninth grade students who want to leave their mark on the community. Logan says, “I just want to give back. There are so many people in the area who need help.” Initially, a coat drive was held to gather winter coats for the local rescue mission. Later, a peanut butter and jelly war broke out and the boys were victorious. Spring was marked with a spring cleaning event to collect clothing items for the needy. C.A.R.E. provides students the opportunity to give back to the local area through service projects and service learning experiences. The students involved in this organization were able to visit the local rescue mission, sparking interest in future projects. Their hope is that all of the students can visit the Jefferson County Rescue Mission to witness the power of service learning.
