Kennerly Students Raise a Village
Kennerly Elementary School wanted the entire student body to focus on a service project with a true learning component, when it began working with Wings of Hope, a local humanitarian organization, earlier this year. School data indicated a need for more student empowerment with opportunities for moral action, so the staff developed a goal to evolve the practice of multiple community service projects to more authentic service learning programs. One of the teachers had an educational connection with Wings of Hope, and the Character Education Team was able to build on that relationship. Kennerly has been involved in character education since 1998, and in 2000, it was named a National School of Character. Sustaining and improving initiatives in character education remains an integral focus with this latest project.
