At Sperreng Middle School, the Navigators is an after-school club that is composed of students of all abilities that build character by focusing on responsibility, service and caring. The after-school club is sponsored by the School’s Resource Officer that is a positive role model within the community. Students in this after-school program participate in service learning and interact with guest speakers who are also role models in the community. Since September of 2008, the Navigators has reached more than 30 students of all abilities who have worked on team building exercises through character lessons and service projects which included: •Creating messages of thanks by decorating coffee cups, to our veterans at Jefferson Barracks Hospital, admitted to the spinal cord injury unit. •Packaged goodie bags for patients at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The inclusion of students with special needs in this after-school program provides all students an opportunity to learn about each other and learn social skills that give them both a sense of belonging at school and civility within their community.
