Project Linus is an organization whose mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Project Linus was first introduced to one fourth-grade classroom at Woerther during the 2008-2009 school year, by an active Woerther parent whose child had been a blanket recipient. This classroom created two fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus. During the 2009-2010 First Quarter Academic Celebrations, the Woerther parents, staff and students chose to participate in the service project as the main activity. The camaraderie and collaboration led to plans to create variations of the no-sew fleece blankets depending on the age level of the students. Some parents and teachers even went to area businesses to solicit discounts and collect coupons for fleece. The students, parents and teacher also shared the idea and inspired others in the school to support Project Linus.
