Crafts for a Cause
Crafts for a Cause is an annual event at Beverly Elementary School held on Valentine’s Day. During the afternoon of Valentine’s Day, upper elementary children create enrichment feeding tubes for animals at the Detroit Zoo, make fleece blankets for the homeless, pack bead activity kits for the local children’s hospital, and decorate bookmarks for the Detroit Public Schools’ literacy project. Lower elementary students make greeting cards for soldiers and nursing home residents as well as create placemats for Meals on Wheels recipients. The students use part of their Valentine’s Day party time to participate in this event. Staff members participate by donating items or services to a raffle held at a family dinner event earlier in the school year. The proceeds from the raffle are used to buy the craft materials for Crafts for a Cause. The staff then helps prepare materials for the event as well as make some of the fleece blankets. Parents and staff members volunteer to set up the activities and monitor the event. Children learn that giving is a positive experience when they participate in community service instead of their normal Valentine’s Day parties.
