Building Assets One Project At A Time
Through Iola High School’s leadership program’s project-based learning efforts, the USD 257 school district and Iola community have seen tremendous improvement in the attitude of students toward the community and the community’s attitude toward the youth. Iola High School students have created a variety of projects focusing on character education and community involvement concentrating on sustainability. Starting with individual students creating a personal mission statement and a belief statement, the students recognize their personal values and character traits in order to identify concerns in the schools or community. Empowered by their personal strengths and passions, the students are able to form, storm, norm, and perform projects that benefit the school and community. The students build powerful connections in the community, generating respect, trust, support, and the much needed assets that young adults need to be successful. Through volunteering and project creations, Iola High School students have built the bridge to bring the schools and community together for a common goal: building a community to be proud of. The pathway has been set for the projects to be sustainable and continue each year with each new class of Iola High School students.
