Feeding Our Learning
Feeding the Learning begins in September when 300 fourth grade students visit the Community Harvest farm. Students learn the mission of the farm and how it meets the needs of local food banks to provide fresh, healthy produce for food pantries. Students volunteer and work on the farm for the day. Back in the classroom, integration of math and writing comes from a food drive collection, an essay on generosity, and statistical data collected from farm production. This year students collected 2,000 lbs. of food which was weighed and graphed each day. The culminating celebration is "Come Together Pasta Dinner," where all proceeds are used to “adopt” or buy a row at the farm. Students return in the spring to plant and harvest a new crop. The dinner is unique because community businesses donate the food. Student council members from sixth grade serve the meals and parents help set up. The Feeding Our Learning unit takes four months to complete. Including adults, about 350 people are involved in the whole unit. This Promising Practice brings our school and our community together based on moral action and provides a hands-on approach in teaching generosity.
