Celebrating Veterans Day Throughout the Year
Students at Oak Brook have made medals and given them to veterans during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Regional Veterans Administration Office for the last four years. This year, our 5th graders were invited to sing patriotic songs at the ceremony as well as visit Jefferson Barracks Medical Center, the Fisher House, and Jefferson Barracks Military Cemetery. After visiting the Fisher House, one of our 5th graders presented an idea to the Kids’ Character Council to support the Fisher House through donations. Members of the Character Council researched the needs of the Fisher House and organized a drive to collect donations to support the house. The Fisher House is a unique private/public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need by providing a “home away from home” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers to allow family members to be close during the hospitalization of military and veterans. Oak Brook Students collected toiletries, cleaning and laundry supplies, kitchen and pantry supplies, holiday decorations, gift cards, and cash donations.
