Season of Service, Period of Peace
The "Season of Service, Period of Peace" (Season of Service) is a ten-week period from Martin Luther King Day in January through Cesar Chavez Day at the end of March where students engage in non-violence/peace oriented service projects. The idea behind the Season of Service is that students need the opportunity to take responsibility for the culture and climate of their school campus and take a stand for the lives that they want to live. Service projects emphasize a number of issues of non-violence and peace from envisioning a more peaceful school to addressing issues such as bullying, homophobia, hate speech and gang violence. This year, a dozen different groups participated in the Season of Service, including the Black Student Union, Gay Straight Alliance, Key Club, Jefferson Service Club, Octagon Club, ASB, Art Classes, Media Academy, English Department, Business Academy, Social Justice Academy, and Latinos Unidos. In all, approximately 750 students have participated in the Season of Service each of the last two years. The Season of Service is now completing its third year.
