Green Paws - Forsyth M.S. Environmental Club
Green Paws is a student-led group focused on understanding our impact on the planet. At twice-monthly meetings, 20-30 student volunteers brainstorm how they, as stewards of the Earth, can make positive change. By researching areas of concern, students gain insight of the issues, the solutions, and what they can do to be agents of change. Some goals already met include: a recycling program, reusable shopping bags, water and electricity conservation at home and school, litter control on campus, and a garden area. Reflection on the previous years' accomplishments and/or lessons is used as a springboard for a direction for the current school year. For example, at the end of 2010-11, a grant of $1,500 from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks was awarded to Green Paws to build garden beds, install rain barrels, and purchase a composting machine. Then for 2011-12, members planned and planted the garden, and voted on what to do with the goods. Green Paws is unique in that it was initiated by students, is powered by students, and is successful because of student led research and personal commitment. The mission has widened from dealing with local issues to a global spectrum.
