Buddy Bag Program--Reaching Everyone
We have a growing number of families who are financially struggling, and we have more students who do not get to eat on weekends without our lunch program in place. Because of this, one of our elementary principals, Kristi Shinn, decided to do something about it. She asked every elementary principal to select 10 children of need to be part of our Buddy Bag Program. This program positively impacts our students who are in need of food. This is a task that is completed every week. In each bag, there are three dinners, two lunches and two breakfasts that are kid-friendly and that can be prepared by the child. This is a lot to pack and distribute to six elementary schools in three different towns. Problem solved! Kristi Shinn went to our high school and discussed the program with Athletic and Activities Director, Jason Smith. This is where our program started to look different than other Buddy Bag Programs across our nation. Every Wednesday, our athletes and coaches pack the bags and prepare them for distribution to our six elementary campuses. The athletes and coaches do this task after school before they begin practice.
