Pittsburg: Elm Acres Service Learning Projects
Elm Acres is a residential facility and is an extension of USD 250 Pittsburg Community Schools; students live at this facility until they are released by the Courts. In addition to their academic lessons, the students participate in weekly service-learning activities where the academics are reinforced through these activities. One of the projects included sewing and donating 97 fleece hats, scarves, and blankets to the Pittsburg area Wesley House to benefit homeless children and adults. Another project has our students visiting a local assisted living home every two weeks where the students play bingo, cards, or just visit with the residents. This activity helps the residents keep their fine motor and mental skills sharp, and it fosters the students' relationship building and communication skills. Our students are involved in a third project by making vibrant pillow cases for the local hospital's Cancer Center. One of the nurses told us that the colorful, handmade pillowcases make a big difference in the morale of the patients. These students who have faced academic failure and other behavior issues are realizing the difference they can make in the lives of others and for themselves.
