We believe that character is the foundation – the cement and iron – upon which our nation rests. Our national report, A Crisis of Character In America, set to be released in January 2025, will detail the alarming erosion of our nation’s character across four essential building blocks (ethical behavior, personal responsibility, humility, contributing to the common good). We will address the root causes for this deep decay and propose a robust set of five actionable recommendations to elevate the importance of character and create a better future.

5 Strategic Initiatives to Elevate the Importance of Character copy

We believe in the power of story and hope to inspire young people to create their own video that answers the question, “What is the Content of Your Character?” We are dedicated to launching this national user-generated content campaign as an annual celebration that pays homage to Dr. Martin Luther King’s timeless words and actively involves and empowers the next generation to understand, explore, and express the essence of their character strengths.

CELEBRATE ETHICAL WORKPLACE LEADERS

We believe in Character-nomics, the notion that creating a “culture of character” in the workplace positively impacts the bottom line. Our vision is to expand our celebrated Ethics In Action Award and recognize 50 workplace leaders each year who model and reinforce that character-centered principles power financial resilience, attract top talent, and redefine success. Workplace leaders who believe that “Being Good is Good for Business” and that "Character Defines Success."

Commitment

Parents need to commit to model and reinforce to their children the core values and character strengths that mean the most to them. They also need to be creative and offer meaningful experiences that illuminate how important these character strengths are to the family’s core values.

Conversations

We know “We need to talk” freaks kids out, but too often parents avoid having conversations about character, especially as children get older. While it may not be easy to talk sometimes, we know from the research that parents who avoid talking to their children about serious matters quickly lose trust and connection.

Celebration

Parents need to find ways for their children to be active participants in their own character growth. Optimal character development occurs when children begin to make self-motivated commitments to consistently practice a core value (e.g. “I want to be the kind of person who is always honest and shows up on time.”) Parents need to celebrate these moments to shape and define individual character.
