Goal Setting at BCS
Birmingham Covington

Student goal setting is a unique feature of BCS. Annually, each child establishes an academic and personal goal which reflects our character education traits. A goal-setting conference is convened at the beginning of the school year with the child, the teacher, and the parent to discuss the child’s identified goals and to sign a three-way commitment.

  • 1. Prior to the end of the school year, each classroom teacher teaches/reviews goal setting with his/her students.

2. A goal-setting packet is sent home at the beginning of the summer with each child. Parents and students answer a set of goal-setting questions individually.

3. The students write their goals and then discuss them with their parents at home during the summer.

4. At the beginning of the next school year, the teacher, the parent, and the child meet at a goal-setting conference to finalize the goals. The goals are put in the child’s Educational Development Plan. The goals may also be saved to a CD or flash drive for a student to evaluate progress over time.
The Reflection Sheet is used every 10 weeks to evaluate whether a student has attained the goal.  When the goal is attained, a new goal is set.
