The Best Me I Can Be!

Shades Cahaba Elementary School

At the beginning of the school year, families are asked to fill out questionnaires identifying character strengths and weaknesses the student feels he/she embodies. As the student begins to develop a healthy sense of self they are also asked to set specific goals to improve their character traits. Goals can be reviewed, reflected upon, changed and even mastered throughout the year.

Families will help students identify character strengths and weaknesses. Students will work with peers and teacher to set goals for greater character development throughout the school year.
Character pre-assessment piece can be sent home before the school year begins or in the first week of instruction.
1. Character pre-assessment sent home
2. Collect all character assessments (anyone with families unwilling/able to participate could use a peer helper, mentor teacher or former teacher to aid with the assessment.)
3. Review and discuss goal setting; goals must me SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely.)
4. Students work with a partner, group or teacher to set goals to achieve goals.
5. Goal sheets are copied and kept visible to keep the students reflecting on progress. A copy should be sent home to encourage reflection and growth at home as well.
Monthly revisiting of the goals through journal writing reflections world be an adequate assessment. For older students a rubric may be helpful to gauge growth.
Students with limited family involvement could use guidance from a former teacher, an older student, counselor or peer.
To review words in the classroom or at home students/families can visit the School Tube website for informational videos on each character word. Great ideas for goal setting can come from these videos!
