Touchstone and Unifying Themes

Each School of Character has its own “character-inspired” language – a touchstone, motto, acronym, or unifying theme that drives home the message of what it means to be a member of the school community. Research shows how critical it is for schools to create a common language. Here are five examples:

* Juan Pablo Duarte – Jose Julian Marti School (New Jersey) has created a house system where each house has its own crest, mantra, and hand symbol that reflects one of the school’s core values.

* Harmony School of Science El Paso, MS/HS (Texas) strives for all students, staff, and families to practice being FIERCE (Friendly, Integrity, Empathetic Respectful, Collaborative, and Engaged).

* Washington Middle School (Missouri) have established ROCK as their touchstone (Respect, Ownership, Commitment, Kindness).

* Vestavia Hills Elementary at Cahaba Heights (Alabama) has a Big 3 touchstone (Be safe, Be Respectful, and Be your best).

* Pen Argyl High School (Pennsylvania) has embraced the “Code of the Green Knight” which includes the core values of Protect Integrity, Accept Challenges, Honor Diversity, Salute Kindness.”

Character-Inspired Resources

No one program, curriculum, or set of teaching practices guarantees an effective character initiative. The beauty of the 11 Principles Framework is that it offers schools the flexibility to connect everything that they are doing (both inside and outside the classroom) to foster character and social-emotional learning.

Below are some of the most prominent programs and initiatives our 71 schools and 3 school districts described in their applications as important to their comprehensive and intentional character initiative (alphabetical listing):

The Character.org Board and Staff are proud to recognize and celebrate the 71 schools and 3 school districts that have earned their National School/District of Character certification. Each of these schools has put in place a comprehensive approach to help students understand, care about, and consistently practice the core values and character strengths that will help them flourish in schools, in relationships, in the workplace, and as citizens.

Well done!
